Membrane-induced bundling of actin filaments.

Dynamic interplay between the plasma membrane and underlying cytoskeleton is essential for cellular shape change. Spatial organization of actin filaments, whose growth generates membrane deformations during motility 1, phagocytosis 2, endocytosis 3, and cytokinesis 4, is mediated by specific protein-protein interactions that branch, crosslink, and bundle filaments into networks that interact wi...

Nonvanishing string tension of elastic membrane models

By using the grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations on spherical surfaces with two fixed vertices separated by the distance L, we find that the second-order phase transition changes to the first-order one when L is sufficiently large. We find that string tension σ 6= 0 in the smooth phase while σ → 0 in the wrinkled phase.

Modeling the evolution of cells outgrowth due to the force exerted by actins

Motility and membrane deformation are crucial to motile cells. Therefore formation of protrusion in the membrane has been the subject of various studies. The stable shape of the membrane and also its movements are controlled by the forces exerted by actin filaments. In order to study the protrusion behavior, we represented a toy model based on actin filaments polar characteristic and elastic ch...

Actin Filaments as Tension Sensors

The field of mechanobiology has witnessed an explosive growth over the past several years as interest has greatly increased in understanding how mechanical forces are transduced by cells and how cells migrate, adhere and generate traction. Actin, a highly abundant and anomalously conserved protein, plays a large role in forming the dynamic cytoskeleton that is so essential for cell form, motili...

Actin - like filaments and membrane rearrangement in oxyntic cells ( heavy meromyosin / membrane translocation / membrane - associated filaments / HCl secretion / electron microscopy )

The secretory pole of vertebrate oxyntic cells possesses two distinct membrane systems: the apical plasma membrane which presents numerous infoldings, microvilli and processes, and a complex tubulovesicular system located in close proximity to the plasma membrane. These two membrane systems are generally believed to be interconvertible in relation to the functional state of the cell. To determi...
